Antenatal care consists of all the care and help you receive from health professionals during the course of your pregnancy. It is important you take good care of your own health and that of your unborn baby during pregnancy and this will mean attending scheduled appointments with a GP and your midwife at various stages. They will also arrange a number of routine blood tests and scans during your pregnancy and appointments with hospital specialists, should you need them.
As soon as you find out you are pregnant, you should get in touch with us to find out more information on the services and support that are available to you. The Community Midwife Team from Guys and St Thomas is based at Manor Place Surgery and your doctor will pass your details to the team. They are able to offer a community based service and follow you throughout your pregnancy. Patients from both practices may access this service or the maternity services at Kings College Hospital – this also offers regular appointments with a midwife but, at present, these are clinic based at Kings.
After your baby is born you will be seen at home, initially by your midwife and then by a health visitor. You will be invited to have a developmental check on your baby when they are 6 weeks old and we also encourage every new mother to have a post-natal check 8 weeks after the birth with our nurse to monitor their health and talk about family planning. More information on Postnatal Care.
Pregnancy and birth are usually very happy times but they can also be times associated with a lot of worry and emotion. If you are finding things difficult we would encourage you to talk to your midwife, health visitor or any of the doctors and nurses working at Manor Place or Sir John Kirk Close. They will be happy to offer you support and advice should you need it.
